Ballet is the world’s oldest dance form, dating back to the 1600s. Originally started in Paris at the Paris Opera Ballet. The benefits of ballet are endless: strength, coordination, poise, posture, balance, flexibility, musicality, athleticism, etc.

Ballet originally was only available to Royalty and men! Females were invited later. Today ballet is used as balance and strengthening tools for many sports teams, both amateur and professionally. Ballet is also the basis of Pilates, using the same chore strengthening exercises and positions of the body to increase flexibility, strength and balance.

Ballet is a wonderful activity for children, both male and female. It not only helps build a great physical foundation but also teaches discipline, musicality and an appreciation for the arts!

What are the benefits of children studying dance? What should I look for when choosing a dance school? All good questions when considering signing your child up for dance lessons. We hope the information helps inform you of common professional opinions on kids and dance:

Reputable schools will not usually take little ones for ballet or tap until they are three or four years old. All instruction in dance forms such as ballet, tap and jazz should directly relate to the child’s physical development. Physical development and chronological age do not necessarily go hand in hand.

What are the benefits for young children who attend dance lessons? They learn such skills are listening carefully and not talking while instructions are being given. Furthermore they also learn to be a member of a group and to take turns. Classes offer the opportunity to move to a beat, increase musicality and the use of the imagination. Those taking part learn to express their feelings and emotions physically in a non-aggressive manner. Pupils are helped to become more familiar with their bodies and to use their bodies creatively.

What do you need to look for in choosing a school? Having made the decision to let your child learn to dance how do you find a suitable teacher? A teacher must like the younger age groups and be able to strike a rapport with them. The late, great Dame Margot Fonteyn said “The art of teaching ballet and the art of dancing are two different arts, not always achieved by the same person.” It is important to be enthusiastic yet consistent with young children.

Why choose Broadway Performing Art Studios?

Broadway Performing Arts Studios offers FREE dance class for boys ages 5 – 18. Read a recent article published regarding the benefits for boys and dance:

Ballet is not just for girls…some boys are very talented in ballet. Parents must remember that dancing is a physically beneficial activity for both boys and girls. Dancing helps build strength, muscle tone, balance, and coordination. Some boys decide early on that they would rather take dance lessons in a studio than play sports on a field. The following tips may help your son deal with frustrations he may feel as a male dancer.

Encourage his motivations to dance.

Your son may be truly talented as a dancer. Encourage him to try several styles of dance to find out what he really loves.

Give your son male role models.

Take him to see professional male dancers on stage or rent movies with men in dancing roles. Show him that men really do dance, and they dance well.

Compare dance to other sports.

Remind your son that dancing is a physical sport that requires lots of strength.

Let him choose to stop dancing.

If your son suddenly begins to struggle with peer pressure, allow him the freedom to try something else. If he truly wants to be a dancer, he will find his way back as he matures.

Recent Success Story

Ryan Clawson, student of Broadway Performing Arts Studios just completed a 5 week summer intensive at North Carolina Dance Theatre in Charlotte, NC after only four years of dance training under the tutelage of Mr. Kirk Sprinkles. At the end of the intensive Ryan was invited by the school director to attend the professional company and school of North Carolina Dance Theatre as an apprentice, on full scholarship. Dreams do come true! Ryan will be completing his senior year of high school in Charlotte while jump starting his professional career as a dancer, quite an accomplishment for someone who started dancing at the age of only 14.

Mr. Sprinkles has groomed Ryan for a professional career over the past four years. “I saw Ryan’s potential from day one and knew he had it in him,” says Sprinkles. “I could not be more proud if he were my own son!”

Seniors Emilee Morton and Christina Slaton both received exciting news from the colleges of their choice recently! Both girls are dance students at the Broadway Performing Arts Studios (B-PAS) in Mt. Pleasant and are trained by Mr. Kirk Sprinkles, former Broadway dancer. Mr. Sprinkles helped prepare each student for their audition and choreographed their audition dance selection.

Emilee Morton is currently a senior at Wando High School and the daughter of Nathan & Sherry Morton of Mount Pleasant. Emilee is in her second year of training at Broadway Performing Arts Studios, where she dances 4 – 5 days per week.

Emilee was recently accepted into the the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, as a dance major, where she also received a partial scholarship! Emilee plans to pursue a career in the performing arts after college.

Emilee is an excellent student and a wonderful person. I am very excited for her but saddened by her leaving, says Sprinkles. However, I know she’ll be back to visit!

Christina Slaton is currently a senior at Charleston County School of the Arts and the daughter of Darlene Schrader and Jeff Slaton. Christina is in her second year of dance training at Broadway Performing Arts Studios.

Christina was recently accepted into the Dance Conservatory at American Musical & Dramatic Academy in NYC. Christina plans to pursue a career in the performing arts after college.

I have no doubt that Christina will do very well in this industry. She has the passion and the talent to achieve great things! says Sprinkles

“I could not be more pleased for both students,” ~ Sprinkles. “They both deserve it! They have worked very hard and have a great love for the art of dance.”

Before Mr. Sprinkles says goodbye he will have the opportunity to inspire them one last time during B-PAS’ annual NYC Summer Intensive in August. B-PAS takes a selected group of students to NYC each year to enhance their training and inspire them while seeing Broadway musicals, taking hours worth of classes each day, and meeting several Broadway performers (friends of Mr. Sprinkles)!

Broadway Performing Arts Studios has several students attending summer intensives this year at some of the finest schools in the nation, i.e.; North Carolina School of the Arts, Stella Adler Conservatory, North Carolina Dance Theatre, and South Carolina Governor’s School.

“This is why we are here, to inspire and help students obtain their dreams!” ~ Sprinkles
